Ahh, the Costco run. A necessary evil in my household that is done at least every two weeks. The job of grocery shopping falls squarely on my shoulders 99% of the time because Shane hates shopping. He doesn’t want to do groceries alone, so I would go with him. It is an excruciating experience shopping with Shane, he looks absolutely miserable the whole time. Actually, not only does he look miserable, but also as if he is in pain. Physical pain. It’s something to behold… Actually, no, it isn’t. For this reason, it was decided that I would take over the shopping duties, and that’s fine by me.
I sort of like doing the Costco run on Sunday mornings. If you can get there right when they open, it is possible to be in and out in less than an hour. That is practically unheard of for most Costco shoppers! The store is sort of like a vortex that sucks you in and won’t let you go without a little piece of your dignity and several hundred dollars. My wallet is several hundred dollars lighter, but my dignity is still intact, so it’s a win.
When shopping at Costco, I am always reminded how much I really am my mother’s daughter because like her, I almost always make a bee line for the jewelery kiosk. It’s not even that I wear a lot of jewelery, but I just can’t help being attracted to the shiny things in the box, mostly the diamonds. Sigh…. I would love to have some of the rings that they sell there, but there is no way I could possibly justify spending 10% of the cost of my house on a ring, so I always walk away. That is, until today.
It wasn’t a diamond that caught my eye, it was a watch. A nerdy watch (hence the name of the title). I have been scoping out the Garmin personal training watches ever since I started running again. I love the idea of being able to know exactly what I have done on my runs whether indoors or out. So what should I spy in the glass case? A Garmin Forrunner 405CX. For $229. SOLD!
I’m sure some of you might be wondering what is so special about this watch. Simply put, it is more than a watch. I tracks your pace, elevation, heart rate and has a GPS. There aren’t too many sport watches that can do all of these things, and at that price, it was a steal.
After the shop, I went home and took the watch out of the box. I am amazed at the stuff that was packed in that tiny box. See for yourself!

The coolest thing right now IMO is the fact that the charger came with the plugs for North American, British, and European electrical sockets. And what has two thumbs and is going to Europe this summer? That’s right, me!
So I will be spending a large chunk of the afternoon figuring out my spanky new running toy. Hopefully the weather will hold out long enough for me to test it out. I’m going to buy the foot pod so I can use it indoors as well.
Ok, now onto the recipe. This is one of my favorite breakfasts because it is high protein and filling. Also, easy to make.
30g Plain Oatmeal (I used instant because it’s what I had on hand)
150-175g Cottage Cheese
2 Egg Whites
1/2 tsp baking powder (optional)
1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
Sprinkle of Cinnamon
2 tsp Coconut Oil.
Place all ingredients in a bowl or tall container, and blend thoroughly using an immersion blender.
|If you don’t have an immersion blender, use a regular blender.|
Heat the coconut oil in a skillet over medium heat, make sure the skillet is coated with the oil before pouring the batter. Pour batter onto the skillet and cook as you would normal pancakes, a few minutes per side until nicely browned. Makes 4-6 large pancakes. Eat with topping of your choice.
